SAINT PAUL AND MINNEAPOLIS TO COMPETE FOR VOTERS

For immediate release

September 27, 1988

At a press conference on Tuesday, October 4, at 10 a.m. in his office, Saint Paul Mayor George Latimer will deliver a challenge to Minneapolis Mayor Donald Fraser: to see which city can register the most voters in a contest on Saturday, October 8.

According to some predictions, less than half of all Americans are expected to vote in the November election.

Joined by Larry Pinkney, Field Director for the Minneapolis Alliance for Progressive Action (MAPA), the mayors will name October 8, MAPA Universal Registration Day, after the resolution passed by the two city councils. The Minnesota Alliance for Progressive Action (MAPA) – a non-partisan coalition of 20 diverse, non-profit, community-based organizations – has already registered over 5,000 voters throughout the state this fall.

On October 8, the mayors and several city council members will lead teams of volunteers to sign up voters at several locations in each city.

The losing mayor will treat the winning city’s volunteers to ice cream cones.
